During the summer months when school breakfast and lunch programs are unavailable, children who are already facing food insecurities are left with even bigger hunger problems. This affects their physical, emotional and cognitive development, setting them up for greater challenges when they return to school after the summer break.
To help combat the fight against hunger this summer, the TFS Associate Involvement Committee (AIC) sprang into action and partnered with our friends at Community’s Child in Lomita, CA, to participate in their annual “Be A Hunger Hero: Feed the Children” food drive.
The food drive was a huge success, helping to feed over 800 food-insecure children in the South Bay area! In just two short weeks, TFS Headquarters (HQ) Associates and business partners stepped up to the plate and donated over 15,400 items – that’s 158% of this year’s food goal!
This year’s drive featured a first-ever competition between HQ building locations, each sponsored by a TFS Executive; Kim Cerda, Al Smith, and Pete Carey led teams of Associates in an all-out battle to be the biggest Hunger Hero. The competition was fierce and the food collection area was piled high with macaroni and cheese, beans, canned veggies, granola bars, canned meats, peanut butter, and fruit cups. All three teams far exceeded their food goals, and were all crowned “Hunger Heroes.” But in the end, the real winners were the children from Community’s Child.
On June 16th, the piles of food were loaded and delivered to our very appreciative partner, Community’s Child. TFS Associates volunteered their time to set up and staff the food distribution events. Happy children and their families “shopped” for much needed food that will provide nutritious meals over the summer, helping the children develop and grow.
As Associates and business partners enjoy their summer, they will feel great knowing that less fortunate children will have easier access to nutritious food.
