We proudly salute Katherine Adkins, recipient of the 2015 Woman of Distinction Award from the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles. Each year, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA) hosts the ToGetHerThere luncheon, inviting 100 emerging Girl Scout leaders from local high schools and recognizing women from the community who are truly making a difference. Katherine Adkins, who serves as Toyota Financial Services Group Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, embodies the Woman of Distinction.
Originally from a small town in Nebraska, where women didn’t often become lawyers, Katherine rose to become the head of the Toyota Financial Services Legal team. She now invests energy into moving the needle of gender equality in the legal field and supports mentoring, which is a sizeable component of the GSGLA luncheon.
Too frequently young girls have no exposure or access to female role models in their chosen field and this is where women like Katherine have the greatest impact. It is understood that for girls “you can’t be what you can’t see.” Being able to interact with women and understand the challenges, set-backs and successes that helped shape their careers is an invaluable experience for young girls.
The Girl Scouts’ organization is dedicated to providing opportunities for young women to realize their full potential and discover new skills. The Emerging Leader Scouts at the GSGLA luncheon are already making a big impact in their communities. With the learning and advice they receive from women like Katherine, they are sure to take their place as future leaders. Here’s to women like Katherine that generously give of their time to help build girls of courage, confidence and character!
