During the summer months when school breakfast and lunch programs are closed, children who already are facing food insecurities are forced to face even larger hunger problems. This, in turn, effects their physical, emotional and cognitive development, setting them up for greater challenges when they return to school after the summer break.
To help combat the fight against hunger this summer, the TFS Associate Involvement Committee (AIC) at our TFS headquarters in Torrance, Calif. sprang into action and partnered with our friends at Community’s Child in Lomita, Calif. to participate in their annual “Feed the Children” food drive.
The food drive was a huge success, helping to feed more than 400 local food-insecure children. In just two short weeks, TFS HQ associates and business partners stepped up to the plate and donated more than 11,400 items – that’s more than $6,400 worth of much needed food to deserving children in our community!
To add a little extra excitement, the TFS HQ building’s three floors were engaged in a spirited competition to see which floor could achieve their food collection goals first. The 2nd floor was the big winner, exceeding their food collection goals first and even collecting enough cash to assist the other teams in achieving their goals as well! The real winners were the children from Community’s Child.
On June 10, piles of canned beans, peanut butter, juice boxes, fruit cups, bottled water and pudding cups were loaded and delivered to our very appreciate partner, Community’s Child. TFS associates were on hand to set up and staff the food distribution event. Happy children and their families were able to “shop” for much needed food that will provide three weeks of nutritious meals over the summer to help the children develop and grow.
