While most of the nation has their eyes glued to the Presidential Elections, Toyota Financial Services’ (TFS) Detroit Dealer Service and Sales Office (DSSO) is focused on another individual’s road to Washington. Mr. Juwuan Banks, a senior at Annapolis High School in Detroit, won the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan’s Youth of the Year competition on February 27th. He competed against youth from eight other Clubs in the Detroit area!
The Detroit DSSO supports Juwuan’s local Clubs by providing volunteers to support and financial resources. Three Detroit team members have supported him from the start.
“Juwuan has a very inspiring story to tell,” said Bob Buchele, Area Sales Manager who judged at the local competition. “It was a pleasure getting the chance to be a part of his journey in this competition. He exhibited poise and confidence in his speech and interview, his future is bright to say the least.”
After Juwuan advanced to the next round, TFS Credit Analysts Jennifer Hoang and Adam Reitemeier helped to guide his essay portion of the competition. “Juwuan’s essay on his vision for his generation to be drug-free was particularly inspiring,” Jennifer said.
Adam also gave Juwuan an opportunity to practice his speech at a local Toastmasters organization, where a panel of individuals helped Juwuan fine-tune his speech. With enough practice, Juwuan was able to speak to the competition’s audience from the heart, with no notes and no microphone, to profess how his Boys & Girls Club experience helped him during a bout with cancer. Juwuan will compete at the statewide-level against clubs from across Michigan and Ohio on April 9th. Advancing from there will lead him to the Midwest Regional competition in Chicago and finally National Finals in D.C.
