On Wednesday, May 7, 2014, the Middletown DSSO hosted the Boys and Girls Club of Newburgh for an afternoon filled with fun and mentoring. High school students from the Club were given the opportunity to experience the excitement of buying a car, and the financial decisions that accompany the process.
Using their associate leases, the Middletown team set up a “mock-dealership” outside of their building to showcase Toyota’s various models. However, it was the two Scions – including a racing-grade FR-S – brought over by Johnstons Toyota of New Hampton, NY, which really stole the show. Once the group decided on what cars they might like to buy, it was back to the office to discuss financing. Many Club members quickly realized how negative credit could impact their payment, and changed their car of choice from a Land Cruiser to a more conservative Corolla. After a short presentation on credit importance, each student sat with two TFS associates to cover what happens at the DSSO, and the various job functions in the office.
Once the learning portion of the day was over, the pace then shifted from educational to downright FUN. Associates mingled with the students over ice cream, discussing everything from college goals, the importance of saving money, and settling the debate over chocolate versus vanilla! When it came time for the students to return to their club, they were all smiles and “high-fives” on the way out the door.
Although the Middletown DSSO has been working with the Newburgh Boys and Girls Club for over a year now, this was the first time that the entire office had the opportunity to meet the club members.
